The Top 6 Nigerian Albums Of 2013!

We’re about 7 days away from 2014, but before we jump ahead and look into the new year and what it holds let’s take a look back at some of the best bodies of work we got to witness in the past year.
Quite honestly 2013 was a year with floods of forgettable music with little gems of great music buried in between. Without going into too much long story, let’s explore 6 of the best albums released in 2013. Quite honestly this was supposed to be 5 but I couldn’t cut one out between 5 & 6 so alas. 6 albums it is.

6. Waje – Word Aren’t Just Enough

After what seemed like forever, Waje finally released her debut album, Word Aren’t Just Enough, and like we expected she put her stamp on our generation of musicians as a solid force. Apart from the hit singles I Wish, Oko Mi, Na The Way that graced us before the album dropped, the album blessed us with lovable songs like Only You, Fine Girl, and Onye. If only Omini Knowest had found a way to be released with the album everything would’ve been perfect. Deluxe album maybe?

5. Burna Boy – L.I.F.E ( Leaving an Impact For Eternity)

Burna Boy was red hot heading into 2013 with singles Like To Party, and Tonight putting him top of the list of most exciting acts to watch in 2013.

His album, L.I.F.E dropped during the year, and surely didn’t disappoint the fans at all. Run My Race, Yawa Dey, Abeg Abeg Remix, and Boom Boom Boom  are all songs that will be fan favorites going into 2014. The album is not perfect and has its short comings but overall the album is definitely more than worth having in your collection.

4. Banky W – RnBW

Banky W has one of the best voices of his peers, and for all intensive purposes can be called the King of RnBW in Nigerian music today.

After what didn’t seem like 4 years since his last album, Banky W once again blessed us with a nice project that reminded us of exactly why he is called Mr Capable. The lead single, Yes/No is very easily a modern day classic wedding song (I used it as mine), and other songs on the album Good Good Loving, Letter To My Unborn Child, Yes/No pt2 are also tunes that hit the spot on the album. Overall the album is a very good one.

3. Jesse Jagz – Thy Nation Come Vol 1.

Jesse Jagz fresh off his exit from Chocolate City went a somewhat unorthodox route in his latest effort. You could also say it’s what he’s always wanted to do with his music, and he did just that. In typical Jesse Jagz style he experiments with sounds quite a bit, and our verdict is that the gamble paid off.

The stand out hit track on the album is Bad Girl which features WizKid, but overall the album is a collection of good music – Music you can vibe with and enjoy, and most importantly music you can understand and digest.

2. Omawumi – The Lasso Of Truth

Omawumi is a force to be reckoned with, and if you thought her first album was great, then you’d be blown away by this sophomore project by Omawumi. Staying with the same “wonder woman” theme for the second album title, the only real disappointment for this album, The Lasso Of Truth, is the way it barely got a publicity before it dropped.

But as they say, garri no get advert but it still dey sell, and this album as the year went by became an album that the fans, and music critics grew to appreciate – both for the melody and real life lyrics. If You Ask Me, When The Boss Is Coming, The African Way, I Go Go, What A Bang Bang and Belle are songs that are 5 star rated in their own light. The deluxe edition include hits Somori and Lasso Of Truth. In this album, we welcome Omawumi the musical warrior of our generation.

1. Brymo – Merchant, Dealers and Slaves

Brymo was surrounded by controversy this year with his public and still ongoing nasty ‘divorce’ from former label Chocolate City taking center stage in his life. However they say you put out your best when your back is to the wall, and Brymo delivered that in a fashion that nobody expected. So good and refreshing is the album that it’s already being compared to Asa‘s self titled debut album. That might be pre-mature but that’s the feeling I and everyone else I know, got when they listened to the Merchants, Dealers and Slaves.

What’s most refreshing about Brymo’s project? It’s the sheer realness, bravery and honesty. Albums like his typically don’t have a large “pop culture” audience in Nigeria, especially financially, and coming from his previous more mainstream project, this was a very welcome contrast. Stand out tracks are Eko, Truthfully, Grand Pa, & Money, but honestly every single song on the 11 track project is great.
