We Nigerians love a good story. We love stories about celebrity misbehavior, (like Tonto Dikeh having more than her head’s worth of alcohol, and falling on stage). Celebrity breakups, (like Jim Iyke and Nadia Buari breaking and making up). Celebrity beefs,( like Waconzy and Davido trying their mouths at swear words, and Iyanya
being bounced at Davido’s birthday party). I love them all too. But
only when they do have the element of truth, do they really get to keep
my attention.
The Iyanya’s story has failed on that part. It attracted my attention, held me for a brief moment, but failed to really keep me. Not because it lacked the ‘sweet gist factor’, or because Iyanya’s not big enough an artist to be bothered about. It’s simply because it lacks truth.
It was a lie. A big fat lie, pulled out of someone’s arse to attract readers, and create bad press.
I was present at the Davido party, and I even have an amazing video to prove that. Watch it, and be sure to leave a comment about my pretty bald head. Thank you. It was true the party was crashed by people who had no business there.
A lot of people weren’t on the guest list, but showed up anyway, hoping to be let in, or get some money off Davido. One crasher even had his body covered with Calamine lotion (Maybe he had measles, and Davido had healing powers to cure all ills), wore a flowing skirt made out of an unfortunate Nigerian flag, with the words “O.B.O Happy Bday” scribbled in green paint on his stomach.
How now? How will a Calamine-lotioned juju priest make it into Davido’s birthday na?
So a lot of uninvited people were left outside, struggling and begging. When a celebrity, or an invited party arrives, he will sure be let in. DJ Humility, Tonto Dikeh, DJ Jimmy Jatt, and others did similar. Iyanya didn’t have the patience to be let in, so he walked away. He wasn’t bounced, he simply was impatient enough to wait to be let in.
It’s true Iyanya was held up at the gate. It’s true the gate was locked. It’s true efforts were made to let him in. But he had a short fuse, and was impatient. He simply turned, shook his head, and walked away. That’s all.
The Nigerian digital media has gone haywire over the news. We’re yet to really see the human who broke the original sweet ‘Iyanya bounced At Davido’s Party’ story. He’ll sure be somewhere having a good laugh, and drinking to his ability to fool trusted journalists.
I really would have loved to see Iyanya bounced. It would have given me plenty to write and if anything, a lot to laugh about. But sadly, it’s not true, so what’s the fun in a lie?
Let’s all get our facts straight next time. And while we’re at it, we should ask ourselves this truth; will you allow a crowd with a Calamine-lotioned man, and a dirty flag-skirt into your classy party?
For me, Joey Akan, I will shoot at sight.
