The year in Nigerian
entertainment saw an abundance of music videos hit TV and the Internet.
There was also an emergence of new video directors who brought a breathe
of fresh air
Here’s LETSDANZIT’s collection of the 12 most outstanding Nigerian music videos of 2013…
1. ‘Personally‘ – Psquare
Peter and Paul Okoye’s dance video would
probably make any credible top ten Michael Jackson tribute visual
(Jermaine Jackson feels so at least). From the dance routine to
costuming, the twins reminded us of why they are still frontrunners in
the game.
2.‘Emi ni baller‘ – Chidinma, Illbliss, Tha Suspect
The Capital Hill camp flew to UK to
shoot their first collaboration video which served as a re-launch for
the label and a tentative compilation album. The video shot by label
boss Clarence Peters finally unveiled the primary acts
on the label – Illbliss as the boss, Tha Suspect as the street runner
and Chidinma as the first lady.
3.‘Ada ada‘ – Flavour
Nabania’s wedding themed video was just
brilliant; it would make any couple want to tie the knot and married
couples reminisce about that special day. Shot by Clarence Peters, it’s
such a memorable video.
4. ‘Run my race’ – Burna Boy
No other video has depicted the New
Afrika Shrine like Burna Boy’s ‘Run my race’. Clarence Peters and Burna
were able to capture all the elements of the shrine from the dressing
room to the stage to the streets.
5. ‘Caro’ – StarBoy feat Wizkid, L.A.X
Wizkid’s StarBoy launched their label with the release of this video shot in UK by Mr Moe Musa.
We honestly don’t think it’s phenomenal but the clean clear cuts,
models selection, costumes and Wizzy’s maturity all put together makes
it repeat button compliant.
6. ‘Yes/No‘ – Banky W
Now you don’t get to see ‘Mr Capable’
Banky W this vulnerable in a music video. Banky W with the help of
Clarence Peters relived his childhood and walked us through his love
life. There’s not one scene better than Banky pictured on his knees
begging to get married.
7. ‘The world is changing‘ – Femi Kuti
Femi Kuti’s video directed by No-Domain
is an extreme, considering the kind of Nigerian music videos produced
these days. Was the message passed across? Did you feel that sudden rush
of sudden self-realization? That’s was the intent.
8. ‘Komole‘ – Sean Tizzle
Definitely AJE Films’ best production
this year, Sean Tizzle relived a fictional music career starting from
the 80s through the 90s and to the present times. Sean Tizzle acted the
character well, AJE nailed the cinematography.
9. ‘Irawo‘ – Seyi Shay
Probably the highest point of her career
in 2013, Seyi’s video shot by Clarence Peters properly introduced her
into the Nigerian music scene after a feeble attempt. Was it the
Beyonce-inspired dance in the sand or the Mike Okri-themed
‘damsel-in-distress’ concept that made it memorable?
10. ‘Man of the year‘ – Phyno
While every artiste from the East is
trying to make a break in Lagos (the entertainment capital of Nigeria),
Phyno took it back to the streets of Enugu, engaging the residents as he
claimed to be the man of the year. Props to Clarence Peters for
blending contemporary music with traditional culture.
11. ‘One of a kind‘ – Davido
Davido chose to pay tribute to the many
beautiful women spread across Africa and coming from his past
controversies with women, it wasn’t something we’d expect from him. You
can also add that to the beautiful scenery created by GodFather Productions.
12. ‘Omoge campus’ – Brymo
AJE Films seems to have
mastered the art of cinematography as he once again had a brilliant
display in Brymo’s ‘Omoge campus’. The video creatively showcases the
town of Ibadan in all its glory.
