Yesterday one of the leading hip hop publications in the world, Complex Magazine in an attempt to “shine the light” on the Nigerian music, published an article titled: “5 Nigerian Rappers You & Jay Z Should Know”
Featured on the list: WizKid, Seyi Shay, Davido, Kiss Daniel and Lil Kesh
Davido a rapper? Then my father is Aliko Dangote!
The article was written by David Drake who describes himself as an “an honest man and a good writer.” I’m going to need receipts for his claim to be a “good writer” because clearly he did not fact check before putting out such a poorly researched article.
I mean it’s pretty easy to identify a rap song, thanks to Drake there are now a number of rappers who sing as much as they rap, but when did Wizkid, Seyi, Davido or Kiss Daniel ever drop 16 bars? Or did we all collectively miss it? Or maybe he thought: She no want designer/She no want ferrari/She say na my love o/You belong to me/And i belong to her o was the Nigerian equivalent of Nas’ verse on Ether???
You know they don’t understand anything we “Africans” say
David Drake must have gone on YouTube searched for the current most viewed Nigerian videos on there and let that form the basis of his list, because even my “un-hip hop” mother knows 4 of the people on that list are no where near rappers, my 3 year old niece saying her nursery rhymes would be described as a rapper before them! Where’s MI, Mode 9, Naeto C, damn even Banky W has been known to spit a few bars here and there!
Come on Complex Magazine you are better than this!
Trust Naija twitter they went on a full scale offensive when the article was published! They went in on David Drake, who incidentally is also described as a “hip hop head”….I laugh in Urhobo…Hian! Hip hop head ngwa? My mother is a hip ho head then!
After the uproar, the title of the article was changed to: 5 Nigerian Hit Songs You, and Jay Z, Should Know.
